The second Soccer Science Conference was held on Friday June 21st at Hotel Football, Manchester.

The event saw some of the games brightest minds from the coaching and performance sectors of the game inducing Gary Neville as keynote speaker.

With a schedule full of elite level speakers and high levels of experience in the room from both presenters & delegates, the 2018 conference attracted hundreds of delegates as well as top level sponsors & sports tech companies on exhibition. The Soccer Science conference provides real world insights at a modern soccer venue., and 2019 promises to be even better!

Soccer Science Conference 2019

Bryn has been working in the broadcast media for over 25 years, spending over 20 years working with Sky Sports. He now works as a freelance sports media trainer and consultant via his own company, TAGG Media.

Bryn has the experience of hosting many types of events in that time including charity dinners and awards ceremonies, including the FAW player of the year awards as well as corporate functions.

For over a decade, Bryn has been working with the FAW Trust Coach Education Program, providing media training for candidates on A and Pro license courses.

We’re extremely excited to announce that Gary Neville will be speaking at the 2019 Soccer Science conference at Hotel Football, Manchester.
Gary has had a hugely successful career in football as a player, coach, manager and now famously as a TV analyst.

Gary has played 400 games for Manchester United winning 8 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 2 UEFA Champions League trophies. Further to this Gary featured for England 85 times and at 3 FIFA World Cups.

Since retirement, Gary has worked as a coach where has was assistant manager for England, as a manager of Valencia in La Liga, as a club owner of Salford City and also as a leading TV analyst for Sky Sports.

Gary will be providing Soccer Science delegates with fascinating insights into topics such as “a champions mentality” and “the future of the game”. As coaches we need to understand what we’re training for and Gary will be discussing where he see’s future advances in the game over the coming years. Further to this, Gary will also be taking questions from the floor around these topic areas too.

As a holder both the UEFA A licence and the UEFA elite youth licence, Rhys has most recently been working as 1st Team Development Coach at Bristol City Football Club. Initially being employed as Head of Fitness & Conditioning, Rhys transitioned into the technical coaching environment where he has combined his coaching qualifications with his academic background. He has a passion for player development and has developed a novel way to manage and monitor the technical load of each players training in an attempt to make player training more specific to the individual.

Rhys holds an MSc in Sports Coaching Science from the University of South Wales and is currently studying for his PhD titled ‘The transfer of training to match performance in elite football’, also through the University of South Wales.

Previous to his work at Bristol City FC, Rhys has held roles at Cardiff City and Swansea City Football Club’s and has worked as a consultant for the Football Association of Wales in their Coach Education department. Rhys is also a director of Soccer Science.

Educated at Nottingham Trent University, Matt completed both his Batchelors and Masters degrees in Sport Science. After spending the 2007-2008 season as a Sport Scientist at Nottingham Forest, Matt was a Lead S&C Coach at a high performance centre in Norfolk, where he developed athletes spanning 18 sports. Accredited by the UKSCA, BASES, and certified by the NSCA, Matt has been Head of Academy Physical Development at Spurs for the past 9 seasons, overseeing programmes for players that now play across Europe’s top leagues, as well as progressing through the full academy pathway from Foundation Phase to Tottenham Hotspurs First Team.

Shayne Murphy is the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Elite Development Squad at Manchester City FC. City are Shayne’s fourth English Football League club. He joined from Premier League counterparts Liverpool, and before that had worked at Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City.

With a decade of experience working at elite level, Shayne holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Limerick and an MSc in Sport Science from the University of Central Lancashire.

Currently a Reader in Sports Performance at Liverpool John Moores University. Paul is a BASES accredited Sports Scientist with Chartered (CSci) status with the Science Council. Paul typically conducts translational work within an elite football setting that bridges the gap between cutting edge research and professional practice (e.g. not just research for research sake but work that adds value to the applied setting). This work uses a systematic scientific approach to optimising team performance through refining monitoring and training modes. In addition to working as a consultant to elite clubs, Paul is also very proactive in working with medical staff within this setting as part of their CPD through research supervision (MSc/PhD).

Having recently returned from a spell in the Middle East with Aspire, Callum now works as a Senior physical performance coach at Huddersfield Town in the Premier League. Previous to this Callum has held roles with club sides including Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, Shrewsbury Town and Liverpool.

Callum is also a qualified EXOS Performance Specialist and through this relationship has spent a year working in Brazil with Atletico Paranaense and for the Turkish national team at Euro 2016.

Callum holds a BSc in Sport Science & Football from Liverpool John Moore’s and an MSc in Strength & Conditioning from the University of Bolton. Additional to this Callum holds the UEFA B licence.

Matt has worked at several clubs until his most recent role as Head of Sports Science / First Team coach at newly promoted Premier League Club, Sheffield United.

Previously, Matt has held roles at clubs including Nottingham Forest, Watford, Derby County and Tottenham Hotspur. However, it was in his role at Northampton Town where Matt first worked with now Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder. After success at Northampton Town, following Wilders apointment at Sheffield United, Prestridge joined the Blades to head up the Sports Science department. 

Academically, Matt has an MSc in Sport & Exercise Science from Loughborough University as well as BSc Sport & Exercise Science again awared through Loughborough University. 

Recently appointed as Technical Director of the Football Association of Wales following the departure of Osian Roberts. Dave’s most recent role in elite football was as 1st team coach at Middlesbrough FC. After beginning his coaching career as a 17-year-old, Dave quickly earned his UEFA A licence followed by his UEFA Pro-Licence.

Furthermore, Dave has worked at the FAW as a coach educator for several years as well as at Swansea City where he held the role of Head of Coaching and later 1st team coach. Alongside an impressive technical coaching resume, Dave has worked as sport scientist with Wales U21 and holds a PhD in football science.

Ross currently works as Sport Science specialist at Perform Better and is highly experienced in data analysis and evaluation having created databases andpresented to the likes of premiership football and rugby clubs. 

With an extensive background in performance training and coaching in youth and elite level team sports, Kalle is currently Head of Customer Support at Motion 1080.

Paul is currently undertaking his Professional Doctorate investigating the Contextual Nature of Sprinting in English Premier League Football at Liverpool John Moore’s University. His recent research has been a hot topic on social media where Paul regularly uses game clips to give his research real context.

​Previous to undertaking his professional doctorate, Paul has worked as a Strength & Conditioning coach at West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City and Derby County FC. 

Chris joined Norwich City prior to the start of the 2017/18 season joining new manager Daniel Farke following a spell working as a physio at Borussia Dortmund II. Since joining Norwich City, Chris has been an important part of the backroom staff which has seen the club promoted back to the Premier League.
